A Comparative Study on Sentence Characters of Research Introductions by Indonesian Authors in Applied Linguistics

This article presents the findings of sentence characters in article introductions written by Indonesian authors in Applied Linguistics published in national accredited and international reputable journals. This study aimed to identify sentence characters in article introductions used by Indonesian authors in Applied Linguistics published in national accredited journals and reputable international journals. The method employed in this study was a mixed-method to describe and compare the data. This study’s total number of articles was forty from eight different journals. The results indicated that the average sentence lengths in terms of words number per sentence in the international reputable journals articles were 22.38 words, and those in national accredited journals articles were 21.84 words. Also, the results revealed that the most commonly used sentence pattern in both groups of articles was complex sentences, with 414 sentences in national journals and 378 in international journals. It is followed by simple, compound-complex, and compound sentences. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Indonesian authors from both groups prefer to use long words and use complex sentences more often than the other sentence patterns. Hence, there is no important difference in sentence characters between national accredited and international reputable journals

An Analysis of Metaphoric Expression Found in Rihanna’s Song Lyrics

The research aimed to find out the types of metaphoric expressions in Rihanna's song lyrics. Language is fundamentally metaphorical. The reason for metaphoric in language because the way we think is metaphorical. Metaphors are used to help us to express our perspective. There were six selected songs chosen randomly by the researcher. This research was designed as a descriptive quantitative and qualitative research. In writing this paper, the researcher was used the documentation method to collect the data. The steps were reading and learning the lyrics of the song, selecting the types of metaphors expression in the song lyrics, classifying the data, making the description, and drawing the conclusion. The technique of data analysis was using David Crystal’s theory as the main theory to classify the types of metaphor, namely; conceptual metaphor, poetic metaphor, mixed metaphor, and conventional metaphor. The result of this study showed the type of metaphor that mostly used in the selected song lyrics is a poetic metaphor. The second most typically used is a conventional metaphor. Besides those two metaphors, two metaphors slightly appear in the songs. They are; conceptual metaphor and mixed metaphor. The results show that two metaphors found in all songs and three songs used all types of metaphors

AN ANALYSIS OF METAPHORIC EXPRESSIONS FOUND IN RI HANN A’ S SONG L YR I CS

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui ekspresi metafora dalam lirik lagu Rihanna. Penelitian ini dirancang sebagai penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif kualitatif. Dalam penulisan penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan metode penelitian perpustakaan untuk mengumpulkan data. Penulis memilih metafora dalam lirik lagu dan mengklasifikasikan kedalam jenis metafora. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori David Crystal sebagai teori utama untuk mengklasifikasikan jenis metafora. Adalah; Metafora konseptual, metafora puitis, metafora campuran, dan metafora konvensional. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan terdapat 41 metafora dalam lagu Rihanna; 5 metafora konseptual (12%), 18 metafora puitis (44%), 6 metafora campuran (15%), dan 12 metafora konvensional (29%). Metafora puitis adalah metafora yang paling dominan ditemukan dalam lagu. Yang paling dominan kedua adalah metafora konvensional. Yang paling dominan ketiga adalah metafora campuran. Yang terakhir paling dominan adalah metafora konseptual. Hasil dari penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa terdapat dua metafora yang ditemukan di semua lagu dan terdapat tiga lagu yang menggunakan semua jenis metafora
